This is my second mock up of the magazine front cover. I have improved this by using empty space up to make it look more full and exciting, I included a free gift which entices people to buy the magazine. this is because they feel they are getting something extra. I also realised that the magazine required something that explained properly what genre the magazine is so I made that clear with "THE TOP HIP HOP MAGAZINE" I think that this mock up is much better and clearer than the first.

Write up of my first magazine mock up.

This is the first mock up of my magazine. The Magazine is Hip Hop and this is shown through the image and the strap lines as they include the names of famous hip hop/ rap artists. I picked the name "Revolution" because it connotes the idea of something new, different and unique , which is what hip hop is about. I think I could improve the mock up by including more on the front cover as there is a lot of empty space that would make the magazine look more interesting if it was taken up. I chose the colours as they are very contrasting so stand out to each other and also against the dark background.

The social grade table shows the different classes in society and how you fit into each one. Rap music and hip hip would attract the audience of people in E, and D. This is because this the style of music is more likely so suit the younger genearation. This age group fits into E as they still rely on the state because they dont work. Also the working class because these are also more likely to be younger people as they dont have proper jobs but just do small bits of work.
Now we know what social grade the magazines audience will be we can work out the price of the magazine, it cant be too expensive so maybe around £1.50 - £2.00 as they people in social grades D and E dont have jobs or highly paid jobs so wont be wanting to spend too much on a magazine, you could also put free stuff in the magazine to get people to buy itm, if they think they are getting something free it will entice them to buy it.
The features in the magazine need to be suited to the audience so not going into details about work and sophisticated living as this is the lifestyle of the middle classes and wouldnt engage with the reader.

The overall response from the focus group shows that people do read music magazines and they think that they would enjoy reading a rap/ hip hop magazine, This therefore tells me that this type of magazine would sell. The focus group response tells me that I need to include articles written by the artist in the double page spread. Although some people dont listen to rap music others do and this tells me that I need to include some mainstream rappers as well as more unique and less famous ones

My Evaluation

Evaluation of magazine cover

We had to make a college magazine front cover. I choose to call my magazine “wyke” as this is simple and is the name of the college so sums up the magazine quickly and easily.

The language I used is informal; this is because the magazine is aimed at college students, who mostly are aged between 16 – 18 so simple chatty language suits their style in a better way. I tried to set the magazine out like an everyday magazine that you would buy from the shop, to keep it in the style of a magazine; this is done by working with the codes and conventions of a magazine. Such as a masthead at the top of the image and straplines down the side.

The magazine would be for 16 – 18 year olds, as it is a college magazine, it has to suit both male and females, therefore I used colours such as purple, black and white as these are unisex colours and don’t single people out. I tried to stick to these three colours so the magazine looks neat and professional, the colours also represent the college as purple is the colour of the college. As when I was researching other magazines this is what they did. Also the straplines down the side was a common feature of the magazine so you know what to expect in the magazine.  The main strapline stands out as been bigger and bolder so that you know what the main story is going to be. I did this by writing it in capitals to make it stand out. The banner across the top of the magazine is another convention; it is another way of showing the reader what is to be expected in the magazine. The competition puff is a convention and it is used encourage the reader to buy the magazine, if they think something can be won through it or they will get a prize. They will be more likely to buy the magazine. I think that if the college magazine looks like an everyday magazine people will be more likely to buy it.

The price of the magazine is £2.50 as most people said that they would pay between £2.00 and £2.50 when they were asked in the survey.

The representation of the magazine is students, the image on the front shows a student working on a computer, this immediately relates to students as the come to college to work, the straplines are related to music, fashion, work and university, these are all things that relate to students and are things that they might be interested in and want to find out more about.

Altogether I am pleased with the magazine cover as it includes codes and conventions and is relatable to the college so fits the brief of a college magazine.

Analysis of previous college magazines

mock up of a contents page

This is my initial mock up for the contents page. This ,like the front cover, is useful for showing a simple idea of what I would want it to look like. although for this brief I do not need to create a contents page it shows how I would set it out if I was to do so. It shows links to the front cover, like the competition bubble that draws attention to a specific detail that the reader needs to see. Also the boxy setting that seperates different features so that information, text and pictures arent muddled. as the page needs to be clear for the reader to understand.

Mock up of a magazine front cover

This is my first mock up of the college magazine. It shows where I would like features of the front cover to be, and therefore where I think they are most appropriate and suitable. By designing this initial mock up my first real draft should become much easier and effective, as I already have a clear plan and idea. Therefore I know exactly where things need to go and the outcome should be much more effective. If I choose to change something in my draft meaning it wont be the same as the mock up this wont matter so much as I will be able to spend more time and effort finding out what will be best.
