Evaluation of magazine cover
We had to
make a college magazine front cover. I choose to call my magazine “wyke” as
this is simple and is the name of the college so sums up the magazine quickly
and easily.
The language
I used is informal; this is because the magazine is aimed at college students,
who mostly are aged between 16 – 18 so simple chatty language suits their style
in a better way. I tried to set the magazine out like an everyday magazine that
you would buy from the shop, to keep it in the style of a magazine; this is
done by working with the codes and conventions of a magazine. Such as a
masthead at the top of the image and straplines down the side.
The magazine
would be for 16 – 18 year olds, as it is a college magazine, it has to suit
both male and females, therefore I used colours such as purple, black and white
as these are unisex colours and don’t single people out. I tried to stick to
these three colours so the magazine looks neat and professional, the colours
also represent the college as purple is the colour of the college. As when I
was researching other magazines this is what they did. Also the straplines down
the side was a common feature of the magazine so you know what to expect in the
magazine. The main strapline stands out
as been bigger and bolder so that you know what the main story is going to be.
I did this by writing it in capitals to make it stand out. The banner across
the top of the magazine is another convention; it is another way of showing the
reader what is to be expected in the magazine. The competition puff is a
convention and it is used encourage the reader to buy the magazine, if they
think something can be won through it or they will get a prize. They will be
more likely to buy the magazine. I think that if the college magazine looks
like an everyday magazine people will be more likely to buy it.
The price of
the magazine is £2.50 as most people said that they would pay between £2.00 and
£2.50 when they were asked in the survey.
The
representation of the magazine is students, the image on the front shows a
student working on a computer, this immediately relates to students as the come
to college to work, the straplines are related to music, fashion, work and
university, these are all things that relate to students and are things that
they might be interested in and want to find out more about.
Altogether I
am pleased with the magazine cover as it includes codes and conventions and is relatable
to the college so fits the brief of a college magazine.
